The park was opened in 2000, and established on the waterfront portion of the former Kings Park Psychiatric Center.

Northport is a historic maritime village on the north shore of Long Island, New York. Initially designated Great Cow Harbour by 17th-century colonists. They didn’t get it, never appreciating how silly that sounded until 1837. The area was then officially renamed Northport and later incorporated as a village.
